Canyon Highlights – Painting of the Week
Gouache can be Vibrant
These Canyons were somewhere between Zion National Park to Rancho Mirage, California. When the sun hits the stone, they light up. Light bounces off and reflects into the crevices of the shaded rocks, increasing the colors vibrancy. Canyon Highlights boldly exaggerates shadows and plants in an interesting way. Sometimes these mountains look deceptively close to the road and it feels safer to take a picture than to try and sneak by those beautiful but dangerous Teddy Bear Cactus – “Cholla”.
From this painting, you can see Gouache has a lot of Oomph for creating bright beautiful intense opaques as well as the beautiful pastel colors. They are so interesting to blend and layer. This media is also easy to transport for painting on location. Start with intense shadows and work from there.
Sincerely,
