Oasis – Painting of the Week

Same Subject - Two Different Media

Same Subject – Two Different Media

The subject of “Palms and water” is one that I found quite challenging. So, I chose to paint this scene in two different media. Oasis was started first and finished last and Stepping Stones (below) was then worked on in between. Using all of the tricks: turning it upside down, looking at it in a mirror, covering up parts of it and hiding it from myself didn’t help me figure it out. Trying it in two media and going back and forth seemed to finally work.

In Oasis, a wet-in-wet spattering technique created an effective illusion of water hidden behind the grasses. It was fun to layer the palm branches showing slight changes in the light.  I loved pure white displayed with this warm palette.

SteppingStones

In Stepping Stones, the dark values are more colorful. I loved the misty mystery of the two shaded Palms captured by using a different approach and a much cooler palette. Here both the transparency and opaque qualities of acrylic were employed. Part of the underpainting was left to show through the water and the rocks.

Sincerely,
