Hanging Out – Painting of the Week
Subtle Geometry
Can you believe it. These two ladies were Hanging Out on a dock on Pelican Lake. Obviously, they wanted to catch some rays. What’s even funnier is our family was so interested in an eagle flying overhead that none of the men on the boat noticed them. Frankly, I didn’t know these distant figures were nude until I was editing my photos. When our Mission Hills art group leader assigned us to “paint a nude” over the summer, this was perfect and makes a fun little piece.
It was fun painting the nudes, but it’s the background, roughed in loosely, that makes it work. The strong horizontal geometric shape of the dock, water and siding are balanced by the perpendicular verticals of the figures, windows and trees. The irregular foliage softens those geometric shapes and relates to the figures. The figure on the left has less contrast than the one on the right with the white hat and dark sunglasses who was in more of a yoga pose.
Sincerely,
