Any Color As Long As It’s Black – Painting of the Week

Colorful Darks

Colorful Darks

Manufacturing is tough. Henry Ford, was a genius, but his ideas on color, though attractive, got him in trouble when his competitors started selling brightly colored vehicles. Despite being told of frequent requests for colored cars, he chose to ignore the idea. Instead, he instructed his marketing team to respond with “Any customer can have a car painted any color he wants so long as it is black.” That statement:  Any Color as Long as It’s Black nearly bankrupted his business.

In watercolor, it’s just the opposite,  I rarely use black paint and use colorful darks to paint black objects. Placing dark colors side by side can give a suggestion of black and add interest. There was a lot of brass on Henry’s personal Model T’s cars parked at his Florida homestead. The complement of gold is purple so that was the dominant dark shown.

Sincerely,
