Painting of the Week

Starting Over – Painting of the Week

Starting Over

Underpainting

One of the great gifts of painting is the privacy you have to hide the flops. The success ratio may increase the longer you paint, but if you are challenging yourself, it’s inevitable to fail at times. It’s truly a privilege to display only the work you like. Failure is painful, but its lesson may lead you towards success.

This underpainting is above a failed painting because in my eagerness to paint what I saw; I skipped the planning. Instead of throwing all of my work away, paint was poured on top of it and tipped to run leaving some of the deep color underneath creating pattern. This already has given me some ideas about the palette. The long horizontal white line is something to consider as it divides the space suggesting a landscape. I like how it makes me think about it. How will objects overlap that? Any part of the underpainting can be shown, covered up with opaque paint, or painted over with a transparent acrylic color to let the pattern show through.

Sincerely,

American Farm by Ellen Jean Diederich

American Farm

now Available on Fine Art America

American Farm is a new addition to our Fine Art America selection. Customers have ordered different items including a cell phone cover, notecards, reproductions on paper, metal and canvas. Seven out of the seven of the first customers told me how happy they are with the quality of their printing. The prices are really good too, though notecards are still available from Givinity.com (and at a lower rate!)
