Painting of the Week – Fish & Chips

Focus

Focus

You can board and ferry to the Island of Catalina from Long Beach, California. The sea breeze will surely ignite your senses to explore and taste the island. Fish & Chips was definitely an attraction as well as cold beer, ice cream and a variety of merchant wares for the tourists near the boardwalk. There is always a side show in the marina to watch as small boats navigate crews and tourists through a water parking lot of yachts.

An irregular checkerboard, like a tablecloth, was painted in first in hopes to catch the flavor of the island and unite the many shapes. See how the background and the figures go in and out of focus. This was done with lighter and darker blues in the background. Then the figures were blended together with a wash sporting some of their details painted on top. Like looking over a crowd, I painted a few characters more in focus that interested me.

Sincerely,

The Rural Art Juried Exhibition is on display from July 30th until September 28th at the Red Door Art Gallery in Wahpeton. The reception for this exhibit will be held on August 15th from 5-7 pm. All are welcome to attend. To view the works displayed and learn more information about them, visit their website at: http://www.reddoorgallerywahpeton.com/exhibitions.html.

It’s hard to believe that August is practically upon us! Which means that there is just one month left of the 65th Midwestern and only three more weekends until we know the winner of the Joel Hegerle People’s Choice Award. If you’ve voted for your favorite work (or works!) on the theme “The Omnipotence of Dreams: A Century of Surrealism,” remember: you may vote once each day you visit the museum—so, do come and vote again!
