Hydrangeas are such interesting flowers. Sometimes florists use these flowers as a net to hold other flowers. Last spring my watercolor students painted Hydrangeas from my photograph, each creating a unique painting. By coloring the Whites they added visual volume into the flowers shapes. “Opposites Attract” began to sparkle after adding gouache.
Gouache is opaque watercolor and has a Matt finish. The Gouache added a third layer of Impressionistic mark-making over the transparent watercolor and pure white paper. This painting is a little warmer in appearance than my photograph. The Reds & Greens complement each other as they are opposite on the color wheel. Notice how the warm colors cascade downward from Orange to Red to Yellow-Green to the Blue-Green at the bottom of the painting.
This painitng is in the process of begin beautifully floated on an off white mat with a bronze/gold simple but textured frame. If you have other ideas let me know.
