Painting of the Week – To A Wild Rose

Delicate Pinks

Delicate Pinks

My Mother was a wonderful pianist and taught piano lessons in Wayzata, MN. Our house had a big porch that looked out on 2 ½ acres of marshland. Mom asked me to memorize “To A Wild Rose” by Edward MacDowell for her spring recital and I had it down. That day, she put on an easel one of my early watercolors, a big red Canna Lily, when she introduced me. The rented chairs on the porch, dining room and living room were all filled up. I was so nervous. You were supposed to hear the slow flowing beautiful beat of the blissfully short 90 second song. Instead, I crashed through the song in 30 seconds stood up, curtsied and ran out of the room. I felt much better about the painting.

The pinks in this watercolor were made with WN Rose Madder Genuine, Cobalt Violet, Cobalt Blue, Cobalt Green, plus some Indian Red to go tone them down. The cobalt green is a light green and is the perfect complement to mix with pink to tone it down.
