Surrounded by Palms – Painting of the Week
Spatial Relationships
Fixing a painting can be an amazing experience, like this one of downtown Palm Springs, California where majestic palms line Palm Canyon Drive. I wanted to feel Surrounded by Palms. First the palms were extended past the edge of the canvas. That wasn’t quite enough, so I attacked the sky with rectangular shapes of turquoise and green. Palm fronds were then painted into and over the background shapes and some actually decreased in size. Just a few strokes were so effective. This is one to see in person as it comes alive at its larger scale.
Why would this work? Perhaps the palms took over because the connections were extended through the colored squares. The palm shadows cast onto the buildings also increased their presence. By varying the way the palm motif was used, these changes magnified their strength.
Sincerely,
