Deer Crossing is an original watercolor painting by Ellen Jean Diederich.
Behind the piece: In Italy, I discovered this road with its beautiful towering Cypress trees. Many times, I wanted to paint this scene. The idea to add these Deer Crossing, I frequently see at the lake, made the scene. This painting is about the trees. A vertical format was chosen to accommodate their height. Surprisingly, it is mostly a warm green painting as the mid-ground trees are struck by the golden light. The light wraps around the Cypress trees with their narrow cone-like shape almost in a linear fashion. The ground appears lighter than the trees as the light hits directly onto it, except where it is blocked by shadow. The foreground trees are warmer and darker and the distant trees are bluer and lighter in value. The touches of complimentary Red keep the palette rich in tone.
This artwork is framed at 22″ x 31″ and has light greens and browns in a neo-impressionistic style.
