Painting of the Week

Painting of the Week – Lake Home Portrait

Memories

Memories

Buildings carry meaning. We go there, work there, meet someone special there or even live there. Nothing is more personal than our homes. Have you ever driven by a home you once lived in just to see how it is? This painting was created to preserve the memory of a lake home being replaced. The customer commissioned this painting for her husband and he was undeniably happy. They hung it in their kitchen until their new place was ready. Art can transport you to that place, to your memories, in an instant.

When painting a portrait, I primarily see the exterior and actually feel the space around the subject. The viewer doesn’t want to see everything, so listen, think, and look carefully to what the environment points out to you. Connect the subject to the background by contrasting the values (the lightness and darkness of a color) to focus on areas or make the values similar so you can move between  them. I liked how the yellow building reflected on the environment around it.
