Off in the Distance – Painting of the Week
In the Zone
From a little piece of my Medora photography, shapes were joined with comfortable concentration creating this special watercolor; “Off in the Distance”. The trees on the side of the bluff were of interest, the rocks just needed a little identification. I don’t know what the large trees are, but I love their shape. The hill transitioned down gradually to flatter land. Later, a few bison were placed in the foreground. The paint does such awesome things because I left it alone. This gem was created because I was totally in the zone.
Getting in the zone is primo– it’s too bad we can’t be there all of the time. It is those moments that make great paintings. Studying “the why” some days you can paint like never before, and other days, you wreck everything you touch. This was one of the main reasons I wrote my book “Progressive Painting-Your Creative Journey”. There I share my mental techniques that really work. Despite that info, you still have to consciously choose and take a moment to get there. Part of it is the amount of challenge, giving yourself time not to be rushed and having the confidence in a good sketch. Then you slow down and focus.
