Variations in Pink – Giclée Reproduction

Variations in Pink is a watercolor Giclée Reproduction by Ellen Jean Diederich featuring an elegant close-up of painterly pink peonies. 

Behind the piece: One of my favorites, “Variations in Pink” is a compositional piece focused on variation and repetition. My mother’s favorite flower is the Peony. They smell so good and change beautifully as they open up. The buds are the simplest of shapes like little spheres of color and then dramatically open up in full bloom. This piece was developed from my Tapestry series, where I patterned colors in related values to create shapes.

Here are some of the changes I focused on when painting this piece: The warmest warm next to the coolest cools. See how the pinks are almost orange on the left and burgundy to violet in the shadows. I varied the simplicity of shape to highly detailed. Changing the size of related objects. The largest flower dominates the painting, but the small flowers create connections and movements in the piece.
