Behind the piece: I saw these beautiful Dinnerplate Dahlias driving down a country road years ago. So fascinated with them, I had to grow them, and it was true. It’s difficult to tell in this painting how large they are. You can cut them and set them with their curling stem underneath on a plate, and it makes an amazing floral centerpiece.
In this painting, I chose to bring out the blues in the background to mix to set the yellow and red flowers. These primary colors used aren’t as bright as we generally think of them. The values (the lightness and darkness of a color) and intensity (the purity of a color) are altered. The yellow is a tint or very light, the rich reds are varied in intensity, and the blues are mostly a light value which together soften the palette gracefully.
