Painting of the Week

Painting of the Week – Variations in Violet

Color Proportions

Violet is the color of Forgiveness and it unites knowledge with your higher self and conscience. After telling a wise therapist a judgmental tale, she told me to wrap myself in Violet blanket when I got home. Magenta is a color that creates harmony and Green is the most relaxing color for muscles. This painting puts me in a positive state.

Last week I talked about how it can only take slivers of Yellow-Green and Magenta to pop a painting, and here this painting lets those colors dominate. Color is a balancing act. When colors are balanced evenly they become predictable, stale, or even cute. When you choose colors you can move forward. When you repeat a color; keep varying it slightly to keep it fresh yet dominant.

See this new original watercolor “Variations in Violet” at the Underbrush Gallery in Fargo. The colors are even more beautiful in person!

I know you’re used to Ellen’s Landscape & Animal Watercolor paintings, but did you know she paints in Acrylic too?
Check out her Acrylic Painting ‘Bellissimo’ which brings the same Violet & Yellow/Green color proportions as her painting of the week.

See Ellen painting this Wednesday from 3:00 to 5:00 at the Forest Edge Gallery in Vergas, Minnesota along with several guest artists. Kate Whisler will work on laser-cut artwork, Gale Schadewald will have copper earrings and bracelets, and Carol Albright has a pottery demo. There will also be wine sampling, beef brisket and live music.  Hope to see you there!
