Painting of the Week – Meet Me at the Lake

Use Photography to Develop a Story

Use Photography to Develop a Story

Paul & I were on a boat ride with friends when my first inklings for this painting occurred. Entertaining guests, we discovered two Adirondack chairs hidden high above us on a cliff-like edge on the east end of Pelican Lake. I could feel the late summer breeze on my face and longed to sit there with a friend. Fascinated, I drew several sketches of this meeting place starting first with an idea of a diptych – (two themed paintings- usually identical in size that complete other), but changed my mind. The gazebo added to the mystery. Who’s there? Do you suppose they wore a mask?

Basically with my camera, I am a shape collector. I use photography to develop a story. For example, I’ll take 40 different photos of a herd to choose from versus taking the perfect picture. With speed, I can capture many shapes of a place to tell my story. A pile of photographs is standard travel gear on a flight. It was actually on the plane that I came up with the idea for Where’s Petunia? It still surprises me how much power shapes wield directing relationships.
