Gouache is one of the oldest painting mediums in the world and has been trusted for Centuries.  It is basically Opaque Watercolor. It has served many purposes.  Due to the natural mat quality of the paint, it photographs and prints exceptionally well and was frequently used for advertising.  Plein Air Painter have found this medium very easy to transport and particularly helpful. Gouache is also wonderful for planning works and blends beautifully with watercolor. With gouache you can also enjoy those beautiful pastel colors plus you can paint in whites.

As with any medium, there are tricks to understand that make working with Gouache easier. We will go over and practice these skills during the workshop and make a painting or two! I will also compare traditional gouache to acrylic gouache but will be working with traditional gouache.

Regarding Gouache Supplies, this is a fairly economical media.  You can literally paint on heavy drawing paper, tinted paper or watercolor paper.  Watercolor brushes work perfectly. Read about my gouache kit available for purchase. If you prefer to use and existing watercolor palette and add some gouache colors to mix in that works too but staining pigments work best.    At the workshop gouache palettes will be available that assist in keeping the paints moist along with paint sets. I have also used my staining watercolor pigments and mixed them with some neutrals, black & white with great success. I am shopping around to get some good deals for you and will have supplies available for purchase. You can email [email protected]  to confirm any supplies you need.

The classroom has a large screen and two additional TV’s so you can paint along with me. This is not a drawing class. Ellen provides photography and sketches you can trace so you can concentrate on painting. You are most welcome to bring & draw your own.
